According to a recent study from\nthe National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) (1), nearly half of all two-vehicle crashes in\nthe U.S. every year are of the rear-end variety. And, those accidents cause\nthousands of injuries, hundreds of deaths, and billions of dollars annually in\ncollision-related losses. Sadly, most rear-end motor vehicle accidents are\navoidable if drivers would simply use the following safe driving tips.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Keep\nYour Distance <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you\u2019re driving on a city street,\nhighway, rural road, or through a work zone, the first step in preventing a\nrear-end collision is keeping a safe distance between you and the car in front\nof you. That will give you enough time to react and brake your vehicle safely if\nthe other driver suddenly stops or swerves. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While driving in normal road conditions,\nuse this \u201c3-second rule\u201d: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pick\nout a stationary object near the road, like a tree, sign or overpass. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>As\nsoon as the rear end of the vehicle you\u2019re following passes that object, start\ncounting: <em>one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three<\/em>. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If\nyou pass the object before you finish \u201cone thousand three\u201d, you\u2019re following\ntoo close. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving in more dangerous situations means\nadjusting your following distance to at least 4 seconds. Here are times when that\nbecomes necessary:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Slippery\nroads. <\/strong>Rain, ice, snow\nor even fallen leaves can cause slick pavement.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Poor\nvisibility. <\/strong>In addition\nto falling precipitation, you could also have trouble seeing because of fog,\nflying dust or the sun\u2019s glare.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Following\na large vehicle. <\/strong>If\nyou\u2019re behind a big semi with an oversized load, hang back further to stay out\nof their blind spots and to give yourself room to see. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Behind\na motorcycle. <\/strong>A\nmotorcycle can stop much faster than you can, so allow plenty of room when\nyou\u2019re behind one.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Following\nvehicles that stop frequently. <\/strong>School\nbuses, garbage trucks and postal vehicles stop frequently. Some also stop at\nall railroad crossings, so always give yourself a following cushion of 4 or\nmore seconds.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<strong>Expect\nthe Unexpected <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay alert for unexpected road hazards,\nlike debris, stalled cars or large potholes so that you will have time to evade them without\nslamming on your brakes or veering suddenly into another lane. Other ways to prepare\nfor the unexpected include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stay\nout of other drivers\u2019 blind spots, as they may not see you when switching lanes.\n<\/li><li>Check\nyour mirrors frequently while driving, notably before turning, while merging or\nchanging lanes. <\/li><li>When\nyou come to a stop at a traffic signal, leave enough space between your car and\nthe vehicle in front of you just in case you need to pull to the side of the\nroad or change lanes quickly- like when an emergency vehicle is approaching\nfrom behind. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Drive\nPredictably <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t leave other drivers guessing when you\u2019re\nturning, stopping or changing lanes. Instead, drive more \u201cpredictably\u201d by: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Not\nslamming on your brakes, but rather slowing down gradually when approaching a\nstop sign, red light, or preparing to turn.<\/li><li>Making\nsure that your brake lights and headlights are in good working order.<\/li><li>Activating\nyour turn signal well before your intended turn to alert the driver behind you.<\/li><li>Not\nsqueezing in front of another driver when changing lanes, but instead always\ngive them ample notice by signaling. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other\nDriving Tips <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some additional ways to help\nprevent rear-end collisions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Follow\nthe posted speed limits, especially in school and work zones.<\/li><li>Buy\na vehicle with rear-end crash avoidance safety technologies. <\/li><li>Avoid\ndistracted driving, like texting or talking on your phone. &nbsp;<\/li><li>Never\ndrive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as those slow down your\nreaction time. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting\nYour Car Repaired After It\u2019s Been Rear-Ended <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even when using these rear-end crash prevention tips, accidents happen.
