Not being in the best of moods, you decide to retaliate\nby tailgating and laying on your horn. But is operating a vehicle when you\u2019re\nangry a good idea? Although it might make you feel better temporarily, angry\nand aggressive driving, or \u201croad rage\u201d, happens way too often on American roads.\nIn fact, according to one study (1),\nnearly 80% of all U.S. drivers experience road rage every year. Thankfully,\navoiding a road rage collision is possible when you use these tips from the\npros.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is\nRoad Rage So Dangerous? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Highway Traffic Safety\nAdministration (NHTSA) defines overly aggressive driving (i.e. \u201croad rage\u201d) as\nthat which occurs when \u201can individual commits a combination of moving traffic\noffenses so as to endanger other persons or property; or assault with a motor\nvehicle or other dangerous weapon by the operator or passenger of one motor\nvehicle upon the operator or passengers of another motor vehicle\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on statistics compiled by the\nNHTSA\u2019s Fatal Accident Report System (FARS), road rage is a contributing factor\nin over half of all fatal traffic accidents in the United States (2). Driving safety experts\nalso point out that road rage can cause distracted driving, and that alcohol\nand drugs are oftentimes associated with road rage-related crashes.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Examples\nof Road Rage <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When one driver gets angry and tries to\nretaliate against the occupants of another vehicle, they oftentimes use these\nroad rage-fueled driving maneuvers: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Yelling\nand using angry hand gestures <\/li><li>Tailgating<\/li><li>Speeding<\/li><li>Swerving\nin front of another driver<\/li><li>Intentionally\nbumping or ramming another vehicle<\/li><li>Exiting\ntheir vehicle to confront another driver <\/li><li>Honking\nexcessively<\/li><li>Slamming\non their brakes <\/li><li>Blocking\nanother vehicle from changing lanes<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For starters, if you don\u2019t want to be\ninvolved in a road rage accident, don\u2019t engage in any of these driving behaviors-\nincluding \u201cflipping off\u201d another driver because they cut you off!&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Road\nRage Accident Prevention <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although you can\u2019t control other\ndrivers, there are some preventative measures you can take behind the wheel to\nreduce the likelihood of being involved in a road rage incident: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t make assumptions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the car in front of you is moving slowly, the driver might be lost, or they could be experiencing mechanical problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t rush<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allow yourself plenty of time to get to work or school, and check the traffic reports before leaving home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t tailgate<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow the \u201cone second rule\u201d at-all-times to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t drive angry<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If another driver angers you, pull over until you\u2019ve calmed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t lay on the horn<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use your horn briefly to warn another driver that you\u2019re there without sending the message that you\u2019re angry. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t use offensive hand gestures<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s okay to thank a thoughtful driver with a friendly wave, but otherwise avoid using offensive hand gestures that could incite a road rage incident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t confront other drivers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you exit your vehicle to confront the driver behind you, you could be placing yourself, and your passengers, at serious risk for bodily harm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t retaliate<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ignore the temptation to retaliate against a careless driver, as it could cause an already volatile situation to escalate. Instead, avoid eye contact and back off the accelerator. And, that means no \u201cbrake-checking\u201d when a vehicle\u2019s following too closely! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t panic<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it seems like an agitated driver is following you, keep your doors locked and proceed to the nearest police station.
