Since March, non-essential businesses have been forced to temporarily close due to social distancing and stay-at-home orders set forth by public health officials. Yet many auto body and glass repair owners have seen an uptick in business as drivers focus their attention on long-awaited repairs while they\u2019re working from home, or because automobile accidents and high-speed crashes have been on the rise since the start of the pandemic, according to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/edgarsten\/2020\/07\/09\/the-covid-19-pandemics-highway-hazard\/#64ba42614fbe\" target=\"_blank\">analysis by CCC Information Services Inc.<\/a> To protect their employees and customers most shops have initiated new COVID-19 safety protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>COVID-19\nChallenges for Repair Shops <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Auto body and glass repair shops are considered \u201cessential\u201d businesses, which means they can remain open even while other businesses can\u2019t. Unfortunately, serving customers now presents those shops with day-to-day operational challenges caused by the COVID-19 virus: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It can be transmitted by simply coughing, sneezing, shaking hands or talking.<br><\/li><li>It can live on surfaces for varying  lengths of time, depending on the surface.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>COVID-19\nis more dangerous for people over 55 and those with medical conditions like\nheart disease, lung disease, cancer, asthma or diabetes. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/prevention.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">safety recommendations<\/a> from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are effective, they also make it more difficult for auto body and glass repair shops to work with their suppliers and customers. That\u2019s forced most shops to rethink their practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Glass Repair Shops Are Taking these Precautions&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because COVID-19 can survive on surfaces, auto glass shops have to minimize risk from contaminated surfaces. According to a recent <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autobodynews.com\/index.php\/industry-news\/item\/19532-covid-19-outbreak-prompts-auto-glass-shops-to-take-action.html?start=1\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> shared with Auto Body News, these are some of the new safety precautions now being used by most auto glass businesses when performing repairs and replacements: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Following all federal, state and local health department COVID-19 safety guidelines.      <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Asking customers to wash their vehicles and then let them sit for 24 to 48 hours prior to the appointment. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wiping down all surfaces with sanitizing wipes before and after they\u2019re touched by a technician.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Requiring technicians to wear disposable nitrile gloves instead of safety gloves during the actual repair or replacement. <br><\/li><li>Practicing <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2020\/03\/17\/817251610\/its-time-to-get-serious-about-social-distancing-here-s-how\" target=\"_blank\">social distancing<\/a> while interacting with customers, including no handshakes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Encouraging customers to use mobile services such as CCC\u2019s photo estimate app (only for mobile devices) that can be hosted by a shop on Carwise and accessed from a shop\u2019s profile on Carwise, instead of coming into the shop. Many shops will pick up your vehicle and relay contactless updates on your vehicle\u2019s repair, plus return it contact-free. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mandating that all employees wash their hands and use hand sanitizer throughout the day, including anytime they\u2019re assisting a customer.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Asking all customers to leave the keys in their car rather than handing them to the technician. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What\nAbout Collision Repair Shops?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collision repair shops face additional\nchallenges because they oftentimes receive damaged vehicles that are towed in, along\nwith the fact that all vehicles must be touched during the initial inspection\nand estimate.
