Sometimes it\u2019s as simple as sliding a\ngrocery bag off the top of your car or brushing against a bush as you pull into\nyour driveway. Some minor scratches can be fixed at home, but keep in mind that\nrepairing or repainting a scratch incorrectly can incur further damage. Here\nare a few tips on how to decide when it\u2019s best to try a DIY repair or take it\nto a professional. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DIY Options for \u201cBarely\nThere\u201d Scratches<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a scratch is minor or\nbarely noticeable, there\u2019s a chance you can fix it at home. If the scratch is\nshallow and the length or width is less than an inch, you may be able to buff\nit out yourself. A good test is to see if your fingernail catches in the\nscratch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scratch Repair Kits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A scratch repair kit is\nworth a try for those \u201cbarely there\u201d scratches and can be purchased at most\nauto body shops, online, or in other retail stores. Most will come equipped\nwith scratch repair polish and paste, touch up paint and buffers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For all scratches, you\u2019ll\nstart by first cleaning the area with soap and water, using a microfiber cloth.\nThis removes any debris that might cause further scratching. Next, apply the\nscratch removal paste to a microfiber cloth or the buffers the kit came with \u2013\nnot directly to the scratch \u2013 and gently buff the scratch to fill it in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, use the scratch\nremoval polish with another buffer or microfiber cloth to gently buff the\nscratch again. Take your time \u2013 this process can take a few minutes. Don\u2019t\nrepeat the buffing process more than three times, or it may erode the clear\ncoating on the auto body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, remove any extra\npolish with a clean cloth, and touch up the paint as needed with the paint that\ncame in your repair kit. Let the paint dry for 8 to 12 hours, then consider\ngetting your car waxed to protect the paint once again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Glazing Putty Kits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a scratch is big enough\nto catch your fingernail, or that you can see bare metal, it\u2019s a bigger job \u2013\nand you should consider contacting a professional. However, if you want to\nattempt to fix it at home, you can try using glazing putty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glazing putty can be\npurchased at most auto shops and some retail stores. This putty can fill in\nbigger scratches, and it\u2019s the best method if a scratch is deep enough to see\nthe metal beneath the paint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, you\u2019ll again\nclean the area, but this time use rubbing alcohol to remove any residual wax or\ndirt from the area. Next, apply the putty directly to the scratch on the car.\nUse a spreader tool to spread it evenly and fill in the scratch. Allow it to\nharden for several minutes before moving on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, you\u2019ll remove any\nexcess putty with a liquid paint leveler and a microfiber cloth until the\nscratch looks flat and the area around it seems transparent. Then, you\u2019re ready\nto repaint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Challenge of Paint\nMatching <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that the paint\nmay not be an exact match to the color and finish of your vehicle.
